We had to get away...Goober and I
had to go on the run....we
had to! That's a little melodramatic...but partly true – we needed
"space". Last weekend we threw some clothes in the pickup, my horse in the trailer
and "Ruby", the mini Aussie, in the backseat and off to Pendleton, Oregon we fled.
Two of the best friends we have in the world, Larry and Sue Ellen Smith, live there
and 3 days with them was "needed therapy" for Goober and I. I love Pendleton. It's
a "Cowboy Town" with all the western heritage history that any "boot
n' wrangler" American could ask for. It's the home of the world's famous "Pendleton
Roundup" and any and all of the world's best riders and ropers have soaked that
arena with their blood, sweat and tears. Then, of course, there are numerous saddle
and tack shops, perhaps the most famous is Hamley's, long known for everything
"Cowboy". I like Pendleton because it's relaxed, no uppity airs, and no
"tuxedo and tie tuggin' phonies"... nope! While there, I had the opportunity to
visit with one of the best bronc riders ever in the history of rodeo, former World
Champion and 14 times NFR qualifier, legendary Marty Wood. Now in his 80's, Marty
looks as fit and trim as he did in his "open the gate and let 'er buck" days. We
talked rodeo then and now and...horses. Marty is still in the horse business and
raises some top notch barrel racing prospects. We also stopped "up on the hill"
above Pendleton to the world famous "Severe Bros. Saddlery". This big tall wooden
structure has been the home of the best saddles ever made AND the home for
visiting cowboys that need a place to hang their hat during the "Roundup"...Yes
sir. I could live there, it's always been the "Cowboy Life" for me.
God's blessings to Larry and Sue Ellen, great tour guides!
While we were at Smith's, I "tried" to rope for the first time since my surgery....it
was interesting. It amazes me how the body can go into a "no, you won't do
this" mode and send your brain warning signals of impending doom. You see, my dormant
"riding" muscles have been playing "Rip Van Winkle" for over 8 months and when I
backed in the box for the first steer, my body was singing a chorus of "Oh, woe
is me!" Larry nodded for the steer and the chase was on! He dallied up and turned
the steer and I ran for the heels!...HOLY BLUE CROSS and MEDICARE
BATMAN!!!! When I stood up to make the "corner" my surgery leg and
my torn tendon butt screamed at me "what the heck do you think you're doing?!?!"
The pain on a 1 to 10 scale registered about a 65 and I almost moistured my wranglers!.....I
missed. I looked back at the chutes and there were 8 more steers waiting to "laugh"
at me, so, in the words of that famous rural philosopher, Larry the Cable Guy, I
said lets "git 'er done!" The pain started to diminish and I actually started enjoying
myself – getting back into my "old habit"....until I got off my horse. Whoa buddy,
when my boots hit the ground all the nerve endings, muscles and tendons had a fight
to see "WHO" could make my eyes water the worst!...And the winner
was...ALL OF 'EM"!!! I tried to act like John Wayne and walk away
with a smile, but in reality I wanted to scream like a lil' boy peein' on an electric
fence!....However...I can't wait to rope next Saturday and feel that good
all over again!!!
A "story" that we are watching and agonizing over is the absolute mess our
Border Patrol is having to deal with. Thousands of illegal alien children...children
from ages 5 to 17 are crossing into Texas and Arizona and WE
are being forced to offer aid and assistance. This is despicable...and caused by
Obama's "open" border wishes to get as many "illegals" here as possible to bolster
his base and force an amnesty acceptance program. Using little children to force
and transform immigration into America??? That's as LOW AS IT GETS,
but that's what we got when we voted for Obama!
Don't forget Dr-History.com! Exciting episodes of the old West!!
