I'm in a big fight with "Father Time". I don't know what "round" we're
in, or when the fight will end...but....that old bugger is not
going to put me on the mat until I'm ready to fall! Healing up from the
surgery and the "after effects" has slowed me up more than I anticipated.
I thought by now I'd be able to kick "field goals" with my leg....instead
I'm lucky to be able to "step over a dirt clod" - some I step around! Getting on
my horse is a "YouTube" video and resembles a kinky Japanese Yoga instructor....never
mind, sorry I brought it up!! If it weren't for my loving, absolutely devoted to
me, kind and cheerleading (though sometimes masochistic) wife....I
wouldn't be as far as I am NOW in Rehab. I started
entering some rodeos in the team roping again and last night was my first
competition since a year ago!....NERVES???!! - Holy Pepto Bismol!
I just bought a brand new horse, had NO clue how
he'd respond to the sound, the crowds, a clown walking around in a chicken suit...(actually
that bothered me more than the horse), the buckin' horses, bulls,
etc----he was great! Ole' Skip did his job,...it was ME
that "broke the yoke". My partner Shawn Coombs (nice guy!) turned the steer in
the "5 hole" and "Ole Dudley Do Wrong" here...was a little late and had to
"track up" and just roped one leg – no $ for that! I was really mad at myself,
and felt even a little foolish for making a bad mistake, but, my lovely bride
smiled and said - "Hey! You caught and you're coming back!" ….She always
has a way of letting me know the glass is 1/2 full! You know...everyday...everyday...the
newspaper is full of obituaries of people my AGE or younger and
it makes me wonder "IF" they have been blessed as much as
I have in life? Man....it's been a ride! Polio, plane crash, announcing
the NFR, announcing at the Olympics, 2 great kids, grandchildren, rodeos, all the
surgeries, THE best wife in the world!....WAHOO!
Let's put another quarter in the Kmart horse and ride some more!! God has
blessed me and hurt or not, I'm going to grit my teeth and keep going "'til the
motor blows" - YOU should, too!
They don't make clothes like they used to. NOPE! Most
men's shirts are made overseas by some "little person" that doesn't know 2X large
from a hole in his socks! I'm a big guy, 220#, 19 inch neck, 36 inch sleeve length,
and some of the shirts in my size wouldn't fit a third grader – a
small third grader! And quality?!?...try on these "shirts" and half
the buttons fall off, and don't use the pockets because they're not "deep enough"
to hold a piece of chewing gum! The jeans are the worst! I wear Wranglers – always
have. But lately, the quality has diminished to the point that I feel the pair
I have on at any given moment, may fall apart and leave me "naked to the
world!"...that's a real sobering thought! I put my hand in my back pocket to get
my billfold and the pocket ripped off - ripped off! What??? Remember the
"good ole' days" when new jeans were so stiff – even after 72 washings, they'd stand
up in your bedroom by themselves?? And when you wore them, you were
a tougher person because of the chafing and burning the hair off your legs?
THAT'S why John Wayne walked like he did and he was a
better man for it! Bring on the old, rough and tough uncomfortable 30 years ago
jeans....we'll be a better nation for it and our kids won't be crybabies!
Don't forget Dr-History.com! Exciting episodes of the old West!!
God Bless America!
