I'm worried about my neighbor,....I think he's developed a way to injure
himself in a severe fashion...he's building an adult version of "Soapbox Derby".
Rocky is a very bright, energetic, talented soul that can fix anything, do
anything and build anything...however, "this" may be his last venture.
Yesterday my bride of 43 years and I took the ATV's for a spin and ended up in front
of Rocky's shop. Oh sure, there were "others there" - like very large adult turkeys,
multitudes of sheep, a roaming 850 pound pig named Zeus...(Rocky's daughter puts
a saddle on Zeus and rides him!!)...Holstein calves, horses and a sheepdog with
porcupine quills stuck in his nose! But...every day is a good day
at Rocky's!! After greetings and salutations, the conversation turned to his "new"
adventure...building the best and fastest adult soapbox car in American history.
Where is it?? Aah,...up goes the shop door and "viola!" The...vehicle?? What
I saw was basically a canoe welded to the framework of some severely damaged bicycle
frames and tires as bald as my Uncle Harmon's head! "There it is!" a proud Rocky
proclaimed. "What do you think?! At this point I'll admit I had more than
a few questions. I said "Yeah, Buddy – looks good...how do you steer it?"...a furrow
occurred in Rocky's brow as he proceeded to tell me at great length that his "engineering
department" is still working on that! He said that a "trial run" down a
straight slope provided a little fear and panic when the bicycle wheels started
flapping back and forth like tires on a hospital gurney...that's fitting! Rocky
said he had thoughts of jumping – but that would have been embarrassing because
just the night before he'd given his daughter a "talk" on courage!... He made it...he
lived! Next question...what about brakes?... It is here, Dear Readers of Cowpies,
that I should insert the following – the "course" where this "Adult Race" will be
held is a switch back winding road DOWN into the Snake River
Canyon - - over 450 feet to the bottom! No steering! No brakes! Are you crazy?...that
last thought brought up more questions! YEAH...here's
another question...what happens IF you go off the canyon
road...like you know...jumping out of an airplane?!?...Rocky just glared at me and
said 'Hey! Don't try to scare me – I've got that covered!" He walked around
to the back of the canoe and there nailed neatly to the stern (I know my Navy terms!)
was a small black package with about 18" of rope sticking out of the center...Holy
Death Wish! It was a parachute that Rocky proudly announced his insurance
agent had given him!! Rocky proudly smiled through his Duck Dynasty beard and said
"Are ya coming to the race??"... "No" I said, "I want to remember you as you were"....like
I said I'm worried about my neighbor!
This weekend on Sunday is Mother's Day. I miss my Mom, but, I sure remember lots
of good times, great cookin', and all the love she provided to me 24-7-365. I know
she's in Heaven, and working out in her garden or pounding out some design on a
piece of leather...Mom, you were "special!" Call your Mom while you still
can...and tell her "she's someone special!" God Bless
