Yesterday I picked up the phone and called an old high school friend,
and it was one of the best things I've done recently. Rick Layman, now of Colorado
Springs, Colorado, is one of my Fort Atkinson, Wisconsin classmates, and we're celebrating
our 50th reunion this year...50 years!!!!...Yup...I'm an official "Geezer"! We
talked about "old times", family and some of our class that have gone into Eternity
with the Lord. The actual reunion is scheduled for later in August and I must say,
the conversation did rekindle the thought of my trying to be in attendance. I've
never felt that those of us, a "little gray and withered", are living in the Golden
Years....I believe the Golden Years are the 4 very short, quick years spent in high
school. From your freshman year of nervousness and a "lost in space" look on your
face to the cocky arrogance of being the "know it all" senior, those are
Golden Years to treasure. So, for the sake of memories,...somehow I found my high
school yearbooks, now keep in mind dear readers...for me to find anything
in my office is literally like finding a "needle in a haystack"! Got em!! As I
turned each page, I was overcome with a feeling of how fast our lives have been
on the track to eternity...and some are already there. In the "Teacher" section,
I stopped and really thought about some of their comments to me, and, if
I applied some of their "wisdom" in my later career. Mr. Kammer's picture reminded
me of the "jerk" I was in Typing Class. Every time I'd hit the carriage return
button on my machine it would snap up in the air about 3 feet, I'd catch it and
go right on typing...though not accurately. Mr. Kammer would walk over to
my desk and just stare at me, as if to say "Come on, you're better than that"...he
was right. Then there was Art Class with Mr. Hase...poor Mr. Hase. Little did
he know that my artistic talents were miniscule...and yes, I am sorry I blew
up the pottery kiln! I really enjoyed Mr. Erickson's Geography Class and Mr. Piper
created in me a love for history. My Algebra abilities were somewhat obscured,
and to me, Mr. Lansing took on the persona of "Darth Vader" although we did share
a common bond, we didn't like each other. Mr. Spaanem was a "good ole boy" at the
head of the Biology Class, and Mrs. Carlson had her work cut out for her teaching
me in English Class. The one teacher that really bugged me with his negative, snarky,
arrogant attitude was Mr. Schubert in Speech Class. I really wish, oh howdy!,
how I wish, I could stride into his class today and say "Remember those C's
you gave me, Phil?? How many times did you get selected for the Olympics
or the NFR or voice-overs for movies or inducted into 2 Rodeo Hall of Fames?"...Sorry...I
had to get THAT out of my system! Aaaaah, the high school
years, homecoming, after game dances, bus rides home on a cold February night and...some
best buddies forever...supposedly. But, then we grew up, grew apart
and followed our dreams for a future...many of which never came true. So, now it's
the 50th Reunion, an opportunity to see how fat, hairless and bespectacled we've
become...and maybe one more time...become good friends.
It's Fair Time!! Hot sticky days and carnival light nights with cheeseburgers that
leave a memory forever and possibly a blue ribbon or two. Take in the fun and attend
your county fair!
Don't forget Dr-History.com! Exciting episodes of the old West!! Now in 101 countries...101!!
And not one of them has said they're offended!
God Bless America!
