Oh yeah, I've been scared...a lil'! The other day, as I was taking
a few minutes of "down time" in my geezer chair, I thought about being afraid and
being frightened in my youth. Boy, howdy, how I remember one night before Halloween
when my sister and I were carving pumpkins at the kitchen table when...Knock, Knock!
I, being the oldest and the most brave?? went to the door and...no one was there.
Now, you may be asking "Where were your Mom and Dad"? Well, they were in town getting
groceries and besides, I was 12 and my sister 9...old enough to stay by ourselves!
Back to the pumpkins...Knock, Knock! MMM...a little tingle of trepidation hit me.
I, again, opened the door - - no one there. Now, it's about 7 PM and very dark
outside on a chilly October night, but I started to sweat. My sister, looking up
to her big brother for bravery...didn't see confidence on my face! Back to the
pumpkins. All is well. The Rifleman is on TV and suddenly a yelp and a scratching
on the window glass! We looked into the murky darkness and there, holding a scythe
and a pitchfork, were two grotesque figures in white stained sheets with what looked
like blood, beckoning us to "Come here....Come here...!!!" Holy Buckets!
If there had been an Olympic event for climbing stairs to our rooms and locking
the doors – hand us the Gold Medals!! We waited...5 minutes, 15 minutes
and then we heard the slam of a car door and Mom and Dad's voices! Look
out Gertrude, down the stairs we flew into the kitchen to tell them of the Horror
of the evening. The folks listened patiently and then told us to get ready for
bed...but as we were walking away...my Dad said "Kids!" We turned and there they
were, standing close together just beckoning to us.... "Come here!!!"
Yes...I've been scared...a lil'!
Speaking of being scared...we don't need Halloween; just make a list of the news.
- ISIS & Al Qaeda
- The economy
- 2016 election
- Our debt
- International crises
- Racial tensions
- Demented shooters
- Radical environmentalist
- Hillary Clinton
- Democrats..............
The list can be a lot longer, but I was too afraid to continue...it's true; we don't
need Halloween to be scared!!
Don't forget Dr-History.com! Exciting episodes of the old West!! Now in 101 countries...101!!
And not one of them has said they're offended!
