Enjoy the moment...you may never see them again. This past weekend,
Goober and I went to Pendleton, Oregon to visit some dear friends, Larry and Sue
Ellen Smith. Now I should be honest, one of the "fun" reasons we made the long
drive was that outside their backdoor, about 100 feet across the lawn, is a roping
arena with about 35 head of steers! Naturally, I thought it would be a great idea
to take a horse, purely for fresh air and physical exertion...good for Ole' Stinger
and ME! We had a wonderful visit, ate way too much,
played "cut throat" pinochle and just enjoyed. A few years ago, I'd sold
my roping horse "Splits" to Larry's granddaughter and it was more than a real treat
to see my ole' equine buddy. "Splits" is living the good life...lots to eat, an
occasional grandkid bouncin' on his back and watchin' the clouds roll by with his
buddy,
Jasper, the donkey. Sunday morning came too soon, and it was time to load up, say
goodbye and head for home. As I drove out of the driveway and down the lane, I
looked over my shoulder and saw "Splits" looking in our direction...and it hit me...I
may never see him again. Tears welled up in my eyes and I almost stopped the truck,
with a feeling of sadness that I can't explain. "Splits" had been a cherished old
friend that had given his best for me at 100's of ropings and rodeos and now...we're
apart...forever...whew! I guess the moral to this lil' tear jerker is this...whatever
or whomever crosses your trail and becomes a part of your life...enjoy the moment,
you may never see them again.
One of my all-time favorite entertainers is Charlie Daniels and his "WOW"
Country Band! When they start pickin', I start grinnin'. I love his music and
the Pro-American lyrics. Charlie turned 79 this week and from the 4B Ranch to him...Happy
Birthday! One quick story about Charlie and my Dad. It happened in Sikeston, Missouri
in 1994 if memory serves me and it was funny! One morning, I'm just walking
back to my room from the hotel cafe and there stands Dad talking to Charlie. Dad
had his ever-present pipe in his mouth and he was telling Charlie about how he and
Mom loved to come to Missouri to go trail riding. Well, pretty soon, Charlie said
"I've got to go...are you and your wife going to the rodeo tonight?" My Dad shook
his head and said "No, don't believe so, we'll wait for tomorrow night...we're not
big fans of that Charlie Daniel's Band!!" I about choked! At that point, Charlie
says, "I didn't get your name?" Dad says, "Jerry, and what's yours?" Charlie looked
Dad square in the eye and said "Charlie Daniels!" Ole' Dad turned purple and apologized
and Charlie just laughed it off and left. But know what?...Mom and Dad became Charlie's
biggest fans, and not only did they go to the rodeo to hear him...they bought every
CD available...funny how a little visit can change your mind.
