I was asked to give a prayer before the Thanksgiving dinner. Okay...where
to start? Oh for sure, most of us say the usual...thanks for family, life in general,
our dog or maybe money...(that's one issue that's pretty shallow?!?)...new car,
home...blah, blah...blah...WHOA...Stop your horse for a minute...let's
really think about being thankful. I've got an old bench in front
of my barn and after doing the chores in the late afternoon – if the weather's not
too bad – I take up residence there for some deep "ponderings". I look out
over the valley and see so much that we take for granted and really don't
appreciate. I see the snowcapped mountain peaks and am thankful for the water that
it will provide us in the spring. From that water, it grows the grass that will
render a carpet of lush grazing for wildlife and cattle...(Yes, dear enviros,
THEY do very well cohabitating together!) I see the far off mountain
crest that Deanne and I both went to the precarious summit to distribute the ashes
of a relative and dear friend. On this cold, frigid morning, I see the frost covering
the tree limbs like a coat of sparkling new armor. I hear the snort of my rope
horse as he waits to be fed and the steam from the breath of my roping steers as
they get up from the straw and stretch the "kinks" out of their legs. I hear the
crunch under my boots from last night's snow and feel the sting of cutting glacial
air as it slaps my face...I feel...alive, and that my friends, is what I'm
really thankful for! It's not the material items...no, not at all....it's
the God given ability to see, hear, feel the world around me, drink it in like a
fine wine...life...that's what I'm thankful for...God bless you and....feel
life!
I hate to shop, and I'm very grateful so does Goober. I can't imagine going to
town at midnight to save a couple of bucks on what is NOW called
"Black Friday"...NEVER! People actually in their pajamas with
a jacket, running up and down store aisles, smiling with a fiendish glee that they,
at 2AM in the morning, saved...maybe...up to 35% on that purchase!..oh goody. Let's
analyze the saving. It was minus 2 last night and in my humble opinion, leaving
the confines of a warm, snugly bed to drive 30 miles to "shop" with 300# women that
turn into Roman gladiators if you "touch" the sale item they're craving - - you're
nuts! There's no way a "personality-less" check out girl is going to "swipe" my
credit card at 3AM and expect me to believe her when she says "Merry Christmas –
next!" There's no way I'm going to get home to the ranch, carry the "treasure trove
of items" into the house at now 4:30AM and be jovial to ANYONE
for the next 3 days...I'm going to be a "grouch grinch" and like it...OKAY?!!
Nope...it's the bed and dreaming for me, with warm thoughts of an Arizona
ropin' arena and a cool adult beverage when we're through...YUP...YOU
go shop!
