My "whole life" is on my office wall. Some of the guests that have
been here, in my studio, have exclaimed "WOW, this is like being
in a museum!" Well...in a way it is. I can see the class picture of my first grade
at Curtis Mill Elementary School...all 6 of us and our teacher, Mrs. Kiltz. Curtis
Mill was a one room country school for ALL 8 grades and
thanks to Mrs. Kiltz, we were provided an excellent start to our education...a wonderful
lady that really cared. I look at the photos of my high school sports and
buddies from college...many of whom are gone and in God's care. I see the pictures
of my son, Jake, and daughter, Tobee, traveling from rodeo to rodeo with us, Nebraska
to Oregon, Arizona to Colorado and seeing and "doing" things most kids will never
enjoy.
I see photos of Jake as a "young" junior rodeo clown and Tobee as an outstanding
roper in the high school ranks. I see my mother and father here to visit us from
Wisconsin; they tried to make it an annual trek. Dad loved going with me to gather
cattle in the mountains and mom stayed at the house...always knitting.
I see many of the entertainers and actors I worked with over the years, the Bellamy
Brothers, Reba, Garth Brooks, Wilford Brimley and more. I remember the first time
I met Garth at Sikeston, Missouri. It was the day before the rodeo and HOT
isn't even close enough to describe what Southeastern Missouri is like in
August!! I'm up in the announcer's stand running a "sound check" with the committee
when this guy shows up wearing Wranglers, a t-shirt and ball cap and says he has
the info for tomorrow night's singer. Rudely, I kind of "shined" him on and said
he'd have to wait 'til I was through, and he said he really had to leave. Okay,
okay, "Let me see the information, thank you...and who are you??...he said "I'm
Garth Brooks".....OOPS! I see the pictures of all the NFR performances
I've announced with the best in the business...Bob Tallman, Randy Corley, Boyd Polhamus,
and more...those were the days!
I can see and "hate" to remember the photos of the horrific plane crash that took
the life of the pilot and left my father-in-law and me with devastating injuries.
Healing took an entire year of surgeries and rehab, and mentally it took a lot
longer! I see all the great horses I've owned for both the roping arena
and the cutting pen, they all were special and served us well. I can see all the
plaques and awards and gold buckles and trophy spurs and remember...remember how
great God has been to me....Like the movie "It's A Wonderful Life"....mine really
has been and in case I forget...all I have to do is look at the wall!
2016 is off and runnin'. Out of the gate....I'm going to do my "darnedest" to have
a Happy New Year and I wish the same to you. God Bless you Readers!!
