I saw death today...the "Grim Reaper" was wearing an orange Utah Highway Department vest and a yellow hard hat...and...he was beckoning to ME! THAT'S what it's like to ME driving down to and through Salt Lake City. Road construction (destruction??) all through Ogden and to the cut-off at 600 South in Salt Lake qualifies you to be a stunt driver, NASCAR racer and demolition derby crazed fiend all at once!...I'm boxed in on both sides by 24 wheelers and a delivery truck in front of me and right on my bumper is a direct descendent of Charles Manson, all, I feel, with the same conscious thought of killing me. Suddenly the delivery truck hits the brakes...WHOA! And swerves right in front of the humongous semi less than 36" to MY right...oh, oh...it gets worse...the semi to my left is cramming his wheel to HIS right (my lane) to get in front of ME!!!
Dear Reader...let's pause for a moment to consider my dilemma. I'm completely "cut off" from any driving space ahead of me and horror of horrors, Charles Manson's nephew "Chuckie" is about to scale "Mt. Whitely" (my pickup) with his Hummer! Everyone screams, very loudly, in concert (great choir) and hit the brakes!! I close my eyes and think of the good ways I can meet my Maker...ropin', boating, 4 wheelin'...not playing the ham to a semi-sandwich!!
SUDDENLY...nothing...we're
all stopped and sweating...I look ahead at what caused this BIG almost 6 o'clock news disaster and there is a little orange sign saying "merge right". How nice of them to warn all of us so soon! Standing behind the sign are two overpaid underworked State Highway "employees" (yes...leaning on shovels!) grinning at the "almost mayhem" that was played out before them. NOTE: truck drivers are the best for shouting expletives at "obtuseness" of highway workers. But to my surprise, the best remarks came from "Chuckie" in back of me...oh how I wish I'd had a tape recorder – they were gems! Slowly but "surely" we all crept away from our "haphazard meeting" and continued down "life's highway" to hopefully NOT meet again...but you never know...driving in Salt Lake City!!
Interesting animals we have. Ruby, our Mini Aussie Corgi cross loves ice cream. Honestly – when she "sees" the golden arches of McDonald's ANYWHERE – she throws a fit 'til we stop in and buy her a plain vanilla sundae! And then there's my rope horse "Stinger"... he's a lush. Yup...he loves beer! Not too many nights ago after we had finished ropin', my lovely, young bride and I sat down to enjoy an "adult beverage". I was sitting in a lawn chair holding "Stinger" and suddenly he stuck his neck out, peeled back his lips and stuck his head toward my beer!? I chuckled and said "Want a sip, Boy?"...NO...he wanted the whole can! I poured him a "sip" that led to many more sips and finally with an empty can – he gave a "horse-burp" and backed away!...I have called the vet to see if there's AA meetings for equines!
