He shuffled along with slow unsteady steps. A small, frail man carrying a canvas briefcase. I noticed him as we drove out of the Fred Meyer parking lot and I wondered who he was and where he was going. What caught my attention was his disheveled white shirt and white tie, old black pants and shoes with the heels walked over to one side and worn out. We waited for the light to turn green and Deanne drove across Blue Lakes into the bank. I sat in the car half asleep from the warm morning sun and suddenly the old man appeared walking the sidewalk on the other side of the street.

Each step he took was very measured and short and I could see he was just about "tuckered out". As he climbed a small rise in the pavement, he halted and I was afraid he'd topple over. Deanne came out from the bank and said "Which way home?" And then I said "Follow that old man". We pulled alongside him and I asked if he was o.k. and if he wanted a ride. His face broke into a smile and he said he'd be grateful for a "lift". It was difficult for him to get in the car because of his weariness and age, but finally he slammed the door and said "All set."

"Where are you going, Sir?" I asked, and he said he was going to his church and from his home it was over a 3 mile walk! This elderly gentleman was in no way able to sustain himself for such a grueling march...but he was committed to get to his church. As we drove to his destination he asked my name and what had happened that I was on crutches. I explained to him about my surgery and he said "Zeb Bell, Zeb Bell. I must remember you for my prayers this morning." At that point, he got out of the car and walked into his church.

I'll probably never see this man again, but, there was something eerie and also beautiful about our "chance" meeting...one never knows WHO you are helping. Remember the words of Hebrews, Chapter 13 vs 2, "Don't forget to show kindness to strangers, for some who have done this have entertained angels without realizing it"...he shuffled away with slow unsteady steps.

To those who are wondering...I'm healing very well...with the exception of my patience and personality. It has been brought to my attention by my wife and others, that maybe...just maybe I'm pushing for normalcy too fast! Well...I certainly disagree!! It's been 28 days since surgery, WHY hasn't the wound healed yet??...Why can't I go about my business as usual??...Why can't I go rope tomorrow night??...Why can't I drive my pickup and trailer??...WHY? WHY? Okay Zeb...easy big boy...breathe in, breath out, wax on, wax off...okey doke, I'm cool now...I'll wait till Monday!!
