Now it's "Gray Thursday"...then "Black Friday" for Christmas shopping specials?!? Come on...enough. I've said this before, all the hype and frothing at the mouth to shop for Christmas on Thanksgiving gives me more heartburn than the gravy on my turkey. A federal holiday, a family day has turned into "masochistic blood sport" that some people actually train for!
I've seen the interviews with people walking, jogging or flat out full speed galloping to prepare themselves for the "Mad Bull Rush" into the stores at the opening buzzer! I've watched in total disbelief as women lifted weights and did hand strengthening exercises to better lift items off the shelves and with vice-like grips, carry 37 items to the checkout register! Some husband and wife "teams" actually practice pushing a fully loaded shopping cart at a "full lope" around corners and down the long aisles! And...some are pretty darn good at heaving a 25 pound box of Legos into the cart at breakneck speed! Oh, to be sure there are causalities...some gruesome and mind-rendering!
Imagine if you will...two extremely overweight ladies in yoga pants and not big enough sweatshirts charging head on at each other to grab and own the last power wheels jeep or action figures...BANG, KAPOW, OINK!, as they writhe on the floor tugging and wrestling for ownership. NOTE – Dear Reader, PLEASE do not try to visualize this occurrence – it may lead to heavy drinking to erase the memory!!
A loud voice blares over the in-store speaker "Attention shoppers, massive cleanup on aisle 7, please avoid the 2 sumo-type women gathering wax from our linoleum floors!!" Some of these shoppers even wear "camo and face black" to get in the mood for the impending battle!! Whoa up for a second...breath in, breathe out...wax on, wax off...whatever...slow down and like my friend Wilford Brimley said in the western "Crossfire Trail", - you'll have a more "harmonious outcome".
All of this to save a few bucks??? All the pain and suffering from having a wild-eyed crazed bald headed man drive a cart over your chest as he saves 50 cents on a 5 pound container of Cheeto's??? Not me...I will Christmas shop as I always have...2 hours before closing time on December 24th...no pressure, no hype. I hope you had a great Thanksgiving and I wish you a very Merry Christmas!...Be careful out there!!
