We were young....I hate snow, ice and slush more than most because growing up in Wisconsin...there's a lot of it. By mid-October, we were all set for snowball fights, bruised eyes and frozen fingers...we were young,...the weather didn't matter.

I remember going to the neighbors on a Saturday afternoon to play football, Mom dropped me off and "GAME ON"! The temperature at "Kick-off" was about 28 degrees...but we were young and it was our "two hand touch" World Championship! Of course, you can't play football in the winter security clothing our Moms put on us...so with no adults in sight, we stripped to our t-shirts! Soon the snow started falling as did the temperature and most of us looked like blue smurfs in the frigid cold...but we played on!

The snow made a glassy glaze to the cow pasture and hid some of the frozen "re-cycled alfalfa" (Cowpies) that we kept tripping and falling over...but we were young! Soon our "marked field" became invisibly white, and some of the players started complaining they couldn't run anymore because they're flannel lined jeans were frozen stiff...wussies! "Go ahead quit, put your coat on, call your mommy...us "John Wayne types" will play on!...ah...Dear Reader...truth be told, I wanted to quit more than anyone but...it was my football...I had to keep playing!

Finally...mercifully, headlights were coming down the long driveway...our parents were coming to save us from becoming "Juvenile Popsicles"! With great haste, we donned all the "warm" clothing we should have had on and limped towards the waiting WARM autos...pretending, "Aw Mom, come on, let us play just 15 minutes more... come on Mom"! "NO, get in the car, you look frozen and it's supper time"!! NEVER in my life was I soooo ready to do what she said! But see, we couldn't admit we were on the brink of "Polar Death"! Why?...if we had, she wouldn't let us play next Saturday!!! WOW...ummmm ahah....if I can just bend my legs a bit to get in the car...We were young.

As I sit here at my desk, shivering from the "thought" of severe cold outside, and trying to make my arthritic fingers guide the pen in a legible manner,...I know that corpulent, pudgy people get colder than skinny waifs,..there's MORE mass to shudder! After I put on all the long underwear, super heavy socks, Under Armor, sweatshirts, flannel shirts, snow boots and gloves thick enough to fight Joe Frazier...I'm ready to go feed the livestock depending on ME.

It must be a comical sight from their eyes to see a human figure resembling the Pillsbury Doughboy or the Michelin man trudging towards them. But, they accept the gift of groceries and turn away, laughing at me in their animal way! Once finished, my wife and I trudge back into the house, discard our 47 layers of clothing and sit by the fire! At that moment, I am very thankful to our "Cavemen Cousins" for their discovery and now, I, centuries later...I am the keeper of the flames...life is good!

GOD BLESS AMERICA!

Our Pledge of Allegiance:
I pledge Allegiance to the flag
of the United States of America
and to the Republic for which it stands,
one nation under God, indivisible,
with Liberty and Justice for all.

Dear Lord: Please Bless and heal this land with your grace and power.
Help us to realize YOU are in charge as you were, as you are now and like
you'll be in the future. Forgive us for "straying off the trail" of what's right
and what's wrong and help us to appreciate what you've blessed us with,
the greatest Country in the world...America!
In Jesus Name.....Amen
