Proud of our kids...at any age. I just barely stumbled into my office to write this edition of Cowpies after being at a roping in Meridian, Idaho last night. My son, Jake, called earlier in the week and asked me to rope with him so...load the trailer, here I come. We got to Meridian really early (like I am all the time) and had a chance to put up the lawn chairs and relax. I needed that time to quell my nerves from the absolute "wackos" behind the wheel in the Boise traffic. Driving through the 20 mile stretch from Boise to Meridian at rush hour demands focus, a steady hand and lots of prayers! Its always interesting to watch a "bobbleheaded dolt" go from the far left lane – cross over 3 lanes of bumper to bumper traffic at 65 mph and "catch" his exit!! WOW! OR...I'm sandwiched between 2 huge trucks pulling triples and they're weaving like a snake next to my horse trailer!!...This ain't Murtaugh! Ah...but I digress! Jake and I were 13 seconds on our first steer...not too good...but still we'd get to Round Two. I had a real good run with another partner and we went 9.9...MMMM, I thought, might be a good night. Jake had 2 other partners that were on fire and after the second round they were 14.7 on two and 15.1 on two...HOT! This was one tough ropin', and as it turned out, my son won 1st and 4th, averaging 7 seconds per run. Me...I made the short round with 20 seconds on 2, but didn't slide in for the placings. But know what?? I was happier for my son than I would have been for me to win! Eight years ago, Jake wouldn't even get on a horse, now, he's one of the most respected headers in all of the Boise valley. I sat on "Ole Stinger" and smiled as they announced the winners, and I thought about hearing his name after a touchdown or a basket...I swelled up with pride! Both my kids are "TOP HANDS" at whatever they do...and Mom and I, like I said at the start, we're pretty "proud of our kids!"
