I know...I know...after reading this edition of Cowpies, you can say for sure that "Zeb's saddle is a lil' loose"! I do most of my best thinking outside on a horse or sitting by my fire pit, just pondering WHAT to write for this blog. Then, it hit me! I'm really thankful for all the bad and ugly in my life!!...Whoa...Go reserve a padded room!! Seriously, from all the "bad" and hurtful in my life, tons of "good" followed it. Polio was darn tough and it took away a lot of things kids do and never think twice about them. All the surgeries, the long hospital stays,...heal up...and do it again – 14 surgeries from age 8 to 14...no childhood, just doctors and nurses. I can remember one very "bad" time. I was 12 years old and scheduled to go back to Milwaukee Children's Hospital two weeks before Christmas and would not be home until January 15th! Oooh! That got to me! I remember the drive to the hospital, it was snowing and gloomy, but the Christmas lights were doing their best to brighten a "downer day". I knew Mom and Dad would get me checked in, stay for a while and then say "We've got to go, the roads are getting icy (52 miles from home) and we'll be here day after tomorrow before you go to surgery". I cried, so did they, then they left. Let me tell you about lonely. I looked out the window at the falling snow and the lights and the traffic and the people...and here I was, in a dark hospital room, all alone, waiting for a very serious operation...Yes Sir, that made my eyes "sweat"! Those were tough days! I've been hurt a lot in my life, we figured it up once that I'd spent the equivalence of 4 1/2 years of my life in hospitals or recovering at home! WOW! But you know what?? I'm actually thankful for all the bad times...the polio, the plane crash, all the bad horse wrecks, on & on...why? Simply this...they, the wrecks, made me tough, darn tough and above all, drew me closer to my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ! Oh to be sure, I have my weak moments of "Oh woe is me" but I can honestly say I've been blessed. From the bad times, spring the good – a wonderful family, a life that has been quite a ride and a usage of the talent God gave me. So, when you bow your head to give thanks for your blessings, maybe say a thanks for the bad times that helped create the good! Cinch your saddle up and be grateful!
