Why do we do this??...Here it is, the middle of winter and the temperatures are COLD...imagine that! However, to a committed, dedicated team roper, its 75 degrees and sunny...nope! I'm trying to get ready to go to Arizona for a couple of weeks of warmer fun in the sun. Aaah. Therein lies the problem, the getting ready. Have you ever looked outside your window when the wind is blowing 25mph and the snow is "lightly" falling and say to yourself "time to hookup the trailer, gotta leave in an hour!" THAT is team ropin' dedication! (Stupidity!!) Long underwear, heavy socks, flannel shirt, pullover sweatshirt, vest, nylon windbreaker ...Whew! I can't raise my arm, how am I gonna' rope?? I step out on to the porch and a gust of "global warming" cuts through me like a knife as I trudge to the barn. Deanne has Ole' Stinger haltered and tied at the barn door waiting for me to give him a good brushing...off go the gloves. Holy frozen fingers! Finally I'm finished and we put a heavy blanket over the saddle and into the trailer "Stinger" goes...yes, you can tell, he looks very "equine happy". The indoor roping barn is about an hour away and the drive is real pleasant, gusty winds, swirling snow and fear of ice on the road, but toasty inside the cab. Once in the parking lot, a decision has to be made...do I want to get out or not?? (not is winning). We unload and with hats pulled over our ears head for the barn door. Now it should be mentioned here, that most indoor roping arenas are not heated by anything more than the diminishing body temperature of the occupants... usually colder inside than out! Time to cinch up and "warm" up. Pulling the cinch latigo is usually a simple task but with frozen digits its quite an amusing experience. Now, the moment of truth, stepping into the stirrup, swinging aboard, and the ice cold leather says HELLO to your fanny...its a shock! Once aboard, you notice a slight (mountain sized!) hump in your horse's back...note to self, this means he probably is as unhappy to be here as you and may buck your butt off!!! SLOWLY you nudge him into a walk, then a jog and now the moment of truth cowboy, you urge him into a lope...if theres going to be a disaster, this is a good time! After all this, you are about ready to rope. After about 2 or 3 runs, you start to remove the ice cycles from under your armpits and actually feel fairly "comfortable". For the next 2 hours you enjoy the sport you "love", with friends you relate to...The Cowboy Life. On the way home, you smile to yourself and say "Wow, can't wait for next Saturday!!"...why do we do this???
