What happened yesterday is a crumpled old newspaper...only think of NOW and to the future? MMMM....I personally enjoy a little nostalgia. As we get older and man, am I getting older, I like to sit out on the bench in front of my barn and ...remember. I remember the huge, I mean really big garden my folks used to have, rows and rows of potatoes, beans, corn, radishes, peas, everything!! AND there was no job I hated more than hoeing the garden rows in those hot, humid Wisconsin summers...NOW I kind of miss it! It's funny but in those days, my dad had to "drag" me out to the barn to saddle a horse to ride or practice on, as a kid, I really didn't like horses at all! Funny how things change...if it weren't for horses, I would not be where I am today, I thank God every day for keeping me in the horse world. I've got an old pair of boots that have patches on patches, been re-soled at least 100 times and their original color is not known, but when they were new, they "walked" me into some very prominent places like my first National Finals Rodeo in 1982! Yes, these ole' boots are over 37 years old and every time I pull em' on...I remember. Somedays in the fall as I sit on that bench, I look up to one of the high mountain tops and remember taking the ashes of a dear departed friend all the way to the pinnacle and building a stone cross and leaving him there, closer to God. Many times when we finish roping, I'll just sit in the arena after everyone leaves and think of the thousands and thousands of steers that have been roped and all the fun we've had! I especially cherish the "times" that Goober and I will just build a little fire in the pit, pull up a lawn chair and just gaze at the flame...remembering. Yup...it's good to look forward, but, it's also a comfort to look over your shoulder once in a while. The past...a "crumpled old newspaper"?? Well, this ole' cowboy likes to re-read the stories because they're cherished memories.
