The elusive saddle...just can't seem to win it. I've won trophy buckles for my roping and over 50 buckles have been awarded to me for my rodeo announcing - - but I can't "put it together" to win a saddle. My lovely bride won a saddle for her barrel racing championship years ago, but Ol' Zeb just keeps ploddin' along, paying lots of fees and....no saddle! I have been sooo close only to then make a mistake or miss and lose the opportunity to take home the "leather"! I am extremely competitive and if I lose (often!) I'm going to keep trying harder and harder to succeed. God gave me a great horse and a wonderful, caring, loving wife that has supported my goals all of our married life. I do have lil' problem with balance because of no leg strength – but really – I've tried to overcome that by wearing a seatbelt...dangerous but it helps. So why can't I win the goal I've been striving for? - - - it's my mindset! When I back in the box at a major roping that may pay over $5,000 per man to win...little bubbles of worry go popping through my brain. How fast is this steer, will the header give me a good "set" on the corner, will I be aggressive, don't let my horse "cut in", be where you're supposed to be for the best shot, don't miss your dallies...oh boy! All of these worries and more for hopefully a 7 second or less run! Deanne is 100% right when she says time after time, "Don't think, just DO",...Yeah. One of the people that I really respect is World Champion Team Roper, Clay O'Brien Cooper, he has a great attitude. Clay as you may not know, had a tremendous movie and TV career with roles in John Wayne's "The Cowboys" and many TV westerns including "Gunsmoke". Not too many months ago, Clay was quoted in a magazine article that said "Everybody who competes feels those same emotions, but how we react becomes a decision. I make a decision to be more even-keeled, and conduct myself in a way that doesn't let my emotions control me. I choose to hold myself to a standard that allows me to be in control of what I do!. How true! Whatever our "quest" is, choosing to be in control, with God's help, makes us all winners!!
