Christmas music on the radio....a cold, cloudy day....sitting in my pickup at the Vets....yup..I'm trying to get into the Christmas Spirit! One of the best horses I've ever owned is so sore he walks worse than I do and I'm feeling a lil' "bah humbug"! But....wait a second....slap yourself in the face Zeb!!..you've been blessed way too much to get down NOW! That's right! I literally have NO wants or wishes, God has truly blessed me. We all get frustrated with the "why me" attitude when you feel like you're in the "swirl of the water before it goes down the drain"...then we look back and it really wasn't that bad. I've been "broken up" and smashed all my life, 20 surgeries and hundreds of days in the hospital, but...I'm still one of the most fortunate people I know! I married a fantastic lady that has been there for me for over 48 years...yes, we've had our share of rocks in the trail, but we're still holdin' hands and going forward. Tobee and Jake were blessings and a joy and now their families are continuing life's "go-round", the complete circle of what God's plan is for us. My career has been successful and I've accomplished far more than I expected... Thank you GOD! I've had some of the best horses any cowboy could ever want and each one had special abilities and personalities. I honestly get a little "bubbly-eyed" remembering all of them, the rodeos, and the good times. Ole Speck, moments before he died, walked over to me, nuzzled my arm as I stroked his neck and then he walked away, laid down and closed his eyes for eternity. And then "Splits", the day came when ropin' was hard on him and I sold him to a little girl in Oregon for a 4-H project. Occasionally we'd get up there to see him and that lil' girl and him were a pair...lots of love and affection. Before we left, I went into his stall and scratched underneath his jaw, he loved that...I told him goodbye....three months later he died on a mountain top...fitting...he was close to God! And "Old Tom" was one in a million. I could rope 20 steers on him and have him really "buzzed up" and then, put either Jake or Tobee on him and he barely would move at a walk...the world's greatest baby sitter! Those horses are just 3 of the stories of the over 70 horses I've owned, each one special and loved!! Well Sir, that brings us up to me sitting at the Vets right now, worrying about my current steed, "Stinger"! Somehow he's injured himself and he's really lame and at his age it could be the "trail's end", I pray it's not. But you know what? I don't need any shirts, ties or any Christmas presents, I've already had the best gifts – family and good horses. I've been blessed...MERRY CHRISTMAS!
