Are you the "Top Dog" or the 2nd Banana?? Throughout all of history, in almost every scenario, there is the top person with a close, knowledgeable and very capable assistant. Look at the John Wayne movies, the supporting cast always had one standout that directly enhanced the "Stars" talent. In "El Dorado", Wayne worked with my friend James Caan as his "2nd Banana", and in "Rooster Cogburn, the power of Katherine Hepburn was outstanding. The Andy Griffith Show" featured one of the best comedic actors ever...Barney played by Don Knotts. On the western series "Gunsmoke" the inclusion of Ken Curtis as "Festus" was absolutely amazing in his rapport with James Arness as "Matt Dillon". Those are just a few examples of the "2nd Banana" making the project work. The same is true in everyday life, in almost every situation. My radio program depends on a "supporting cast", the engineer, good interesting guests and my wife, who is so valuable as an advertising agent and bookkeeper. She is my best "2nd Banana". Every sports team has a "star" that is totally dependent upon great assisting players, every amazing architect needs the best of builders to create his wonders. I really get teed off at some of the outstanding running backs in football that flaunt how prominently magnificent they are...when in essence they probably would have been drilled for a five yard loss had it not been for a bloody nosed, scar faced offensive guard leading the way!! Look over your shoulder at your "2nd Banana" and thank God they're what they are and who they are in a supporting role to...YOU!
